Ask most women what they would like for a gift and a new handbag almost always pops up alongside a new piece of jewelry.
As a young girl I remember traveling with my mother from Brooklyn to Manhattan on the “D” train to Lord & Taylor Department Store’s annual handbag sale. We would arrive at the store and spend hours sorting through all of the sale bags and ultimately end up with a handbag that was either brown or black (only one new bag per year!), leather, and mine had a shoulder strap while Mom’s had a traditional top handle.
So what makes certain handbags so irresistible?
Exclusivity for one. Everyone wants a bag that is, by virtue of its price, or the number available for sale, deemed exclusive. Think Chanel, Hermes or Louis Vuitton.
Another factor is utility. What are one’s current needs? Do you need a cross-body in order to be hands free,a clutch for evenings, or a bag to place on your arm that is functional yet stylish?
Other considerations in the selection process include color, shape, size, and materials. Black, brown or red? Rectangular or a sack? Large, small or medium? Leather or cloth?
All of these factors come into play when deciding upon the newest addition to your current collection. Above all, it is an opportunity to express your individuality and personality. But beware! You will be judged by the handbag you carry!
