We recently took a trip to New York City and had a wonderful time! There truly is something going on there at all hours of the day or night! Trip highlights include great theater, great food, great sightseeing and great shopping! Doesn’t that sound like a winning formula?
As for theater, we saw “Jersey Boys” and “Anything Goes.” They are both musicals and were outstanding performances! “Jersey Boys” is about the evolution of the group, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, and featured their music. “Anything Goes” is a revival of Cole Porter’s romantic comedy. It takes place aboard an ocean-liner during the 1930’s. The costumes, dancing and music from that era are fabulous.
When it comes to restaurants, it is difficult to find a bad one in New York City! We had several unforgettable meals. “Victor’s Cafe” serves incredible Cuban food, that combined with the music and the ambiance transports you to what it must have been like in Old Havana. “The Russian Tea Room” is elegantly decorated in gold and red and serves delicious Russian cuisine that includes Chicken Kiev and Boeuf a la Stroganoff. The Borscht was the best that I have ever eaten.
Highlights in sightseeing were the 9/11 Memorial, Top of the Rock, the Museum of Modern Art, Central Park, Chinatown and Little Italy.
As for shopping, a New York City staple that we do not have in Texas is Bloomingdale’s on 59th Street! I managed to do some major damage there and in many of the individual shops along Fifth Avenue.
This is a vacation that is on the expensive side, but worth every penny!
I have two trips planned: one to New York City (my birthplace) and one to Charleston , South Carolina (a place that I have always wanted to visit). I intend to go on many more!
My husband and I have decided to add traveling to our activity list as we are not getting any younger. There are many places we want to see, and it is a great opportunity to reconnect away from the daily hustle and bustle. Shaking up the routine is healthy!
I am always prepared, and here are some of my tried and true favorite luggage choices:
Brighton Large Cosmetic Case
This case is as elegant as it is useful. It is large enough to function as an overnight bag, yet small enough to carry by its double handles or crossbody. It is sturdy and gorgeous.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 with the adoption of resolution A/RES/54/120, this day commemorates the achievements of the world’s youth and encourages their participation in enhancing society. It is a United Nations day of observance that targets young people between the ages of 15 and 24.This year’s International Youth Day (IYD) theme is “Change Our World.” The goal is to encourage youth to make contributions to their communities. The ten areas of focus are starvation, poverty, education, employment, health, drug exploitation, childhood felony, recreational events, young women with children, and the environment. In New York City over 2,000 youth will join together for activities, music and performances. Many other countries hold celebrations as well.

The art of letter writing has had a profound influence on my life. As a New York City native who grew up living in an apartment, I had the good fortune to acquire a pen pal from Miltonvale, Kansas. Deirdre, also eleven years old, grew up on a one thousand acre farm and was raised by a family of multi-generational family farmers. We exchanged letters, photographs, and films for about a year and a half, and then, my family and I were invited to stay with Deirdre and her family on her farm for a week! We all flew out to Kansas, and my entire family had the pleasure of not only making new friends, but of being exposed to a lifestyle that none of us could fathom. Wide open spaces, milking cows, farm equipment, kittens in a barn, the sound of silence, dinner at the Elks Club, were all foreign experiences until that trip. The following year, Deirdre and her family traveled to New York City for a week and I can assert with confidence that they too were exposed to a completely foreign lifestyle! First off, we had to rent hotel rooms for our families to stay in as there was no room for everyone in our small apartment; then, there were the New York City subway rides that they found absolutely frightening, and the noises of the City at night that left them sleepless in the morning. However, they also got to visit the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and Coney Island. All in all, two families from completely different backgrounds, shared the opportunity to learn from each other and to build a bridge of friendship. This was all due to the art of letter writing….
