If you love romance and have never seen Hope Floats before, you need to. It stars the talented Sandra Bullock, Harry Connick Jr., and Gena Rowlands. Divorced beauty queen, Birdee Calvert-Pruitt, returns with her young daughter, Bernice, to her hometown of Smithville, Texas, after discovering her husband having an affair with her best friend. Depressed, she moves in with her mother, and attempts to get back on her feet while fending off jabs from old “friends.” Although he is complex, a new love interest, Justin Matisse, helps her through it.
One of my favorite movies of all time is 1991 “Crazy from the Heart.” It takes place in small town Tidewater, Texas during the 1950s. The story centers around the unlikely friendship/romance between a single older female high school principal named Charlotte Bain, and the Mexican janitor, named Ernesto Ontiveros, who she later discovers is both educated and a large landowner. This movie has many layers. It deals with issues of stereotyping, romance between individuals of different cultures, the importance of education, and for women, in particular, becoming aware of what you want out of life. It stars the wonderful Christine Lahti and Ruben Blades. Blades was nominated for an Emmy for best lead actor in a miniseries for his performance. You will leave this movie both enlightened and uplifted.
