International Youth Day – August 12, 2011
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 with the adoption of resolution A/RES/54/120, this day commemorates the achievements of the world’s youth and encourages their participation in enhancing society. It is a United Nations day of observance that targets young people between the ages of 15 and 24.This year’s International Youth Day (IYD) theme is “Change Our World.” The goal is to encourage youth to make contributions to their communities. The ten areas of focus are starvation, poverty, education, employment, health, drug exploitation, childhood felony, recreational events, young women with children, and the environment. In New York City over 2,000 youth will join together for activities, music and performances. Many other countries hold celebrations as well.
