The Best and Worst of Body Exfoliation
Exfoliation is one of the best ways to pamper your body. Over the years, I have searched for the perfect body exfoliator.
Most body scrubs that I have tried have been a miss. Many are packed with oil and have very few granules, leaving my skin un-exfoliated and covered in a filmy residue. Others have very large granules, making them difficult to spread.
I have tried using my Clarisonic in the shower as a body brush. I found this to be extremely ineffective. The brush is difficult to use in the shower and about as effective as a mesh sponge.
Good: Shea Sugar Body Scrub in Brazilian Nut by Tree Hut
The Shea Sugar Body Scrub in Brazilian Nut by Tree Hut is a great, inexpensive, option if you want a body scrub that smells amazing and is also effective. I find this scrub to be comparable to Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish. In my opinion, this scrub is more effective and smells better than the Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish. This product is also less expensive than Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish:
Better: Dry Brushing
A few months ago, while I was in the beauty section of Whole Foods, I learned about dry brushing. Dry brushing is a technique that uses a dry natural bristle brush to detoxify your body. Using light pressure, you brush your dry skin in long sweeping motions starting from your ankles and moving towards your heart. After this is completed, you can rinse off in the shower. I would not recommend doing this more than three times a week until your skin gets accustomed to it.
Best: KP Duty Scrub by DERMAdoctor
KP Duty Scrub by DERMAdoctor is different from most scrubs I have tried. The scrub itself has a white creamy texture with small granules. In order for this scrub to work, you first smooth it over your skin in circular motions while dry. Then, you wash the scrub off in the shower.
This scrub contains ingredients that will help you get rid of keratosis pilaris (“chicken skin”), ingrown hairs, and severely dry skin. I notice that after using it, small scars from shaving look less noticeable and my skin is overall brighter in appearance.
The one down-fall of this scrub is the scent. Even though it claims to be fragrance free, the scrub smells a bit medicinal when you first apply it. Luckily, the scent does not linger on your skin once it has been washed off. This is the most effective scrub I have ever tried. Nothing that I have tried leaves my skin as smooth as this, dry brushing included.
